Two particular long-chain fatty acids (generally referred to as OMEGA 3) have been identified as being important nutritional factors. It was suspected that this oil constituent (Omega 3 EPA) might protect the body, where a type of blood cell called platelets tend to be over-sticky, and clump together. It is believed that these oils are utilised within the body to produce substances called prostacyclin and thromboxane, which actually inhibit platelets from sticking together.
It appears that Omega 3 EPA also has a significant role to play in cardiovascular protection. In trials carried out at the clinical nutrition section of the University of Oregon, Dr. William Connor found a high level of Omega 3 intake lowered blood cholesterol by up to 17% in presumably healthy volunteers, and by 20% in patients who had high cholesterol levels from the start.
Similarly, triglyceride levels in the bloodstream fell by as much as 40% in healthy volunteers, but by as much as 67% in high triglyceride patients!
Apart from cardiovascular protection, some research published as recently as 2002 looked at the effects of including fish oil in the diets of M.E. sufferers, and found an improvement in symptoms in a significant number of cases!
A diet high in cold-water oily fish would provide enough Omega 3 EPA to be of value to health. However this is not always a practical answer. Omega 3 Capsules offer a convenient means, without drastic dietary changes. The capsules which we offer are 1,000 mg. capsules, each capsule typically providing 180 mg. EPA and 120 mg. DHA.
Suggested use:- 2-3 capsules daily.
